This refers to the area of dentistry specializing in cleaning teeth and treating gum disease. Some individuals only require a routine cleaning, or a prophy, to maintain optimum health. However, others may need a more specialized type of cleaning done either with or without a laser, called scaling and root planing, or a deep cleaning. A dental hygienist typically performs these procedures and when done on a routine basis can allow patients to keep their teeth for a lifetime.
