Dental emergency

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

There’s nothing worse than having a holiday weekend or vacation ruined by a dental emergency. Sometimes you can do things in advance, such as preventative dentistry, to help avoid having a dental emergency or pain. However, emergencies involving the teeth can also happen without any warning. In our practice we have an emergency cell phone that is answered 24 hrs/day and 365 days per year in order to provide our patients with the best possible care. In most cases, emergencies can be handled over the phone and we can help you enjoy the rest of your day. No matter where you are in the world, we will help you work through any problem, get you out of pain, and get things resolved until you are able to make it to our dental office  office. What is minimally invasive dentistry?

Monday, August 16th, 2010

This is a growing group of dentists that work toward respecting the health, function and aesthetics of oral tissue by preventing disease from occurring or intercepting its progress with minimal tissue loss. So, what does this mean? Previously in dentistry there was an idea of “extension for prevention.” This is why there are so many large silver fillings throughout the world. The idea was that if we could eliminate all of the ways that you could get a cavity in your tooth, thus placing a larger filling, it would save you from more dental problems. However, as the science of dentistry has learned more about the bacteria that cause decay we have learned that filling teeth doesn’t cure caries (or the disease of dental decay) and the less natural tooth structure you have the more likely you will have more dental problems. Therefore, today in dentistry we are trying to prevent decay before it even starts (with bacteria tests and treatments from Carifree) and we work toward preserving as much natural tooth when possible. Are you missing teeth?

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Do you have missing teeth that you would like to replace? This is very common in our dental practice and can be solved in a couple of ways. For those that want something that feels, looks, and functions like a natural tooth, dental implants are the best option. A dental implant essentially replaces the tooth root and enables us to build a whole new tooth in the missing space. Missing teeth can also be replaced with dental bridges and removable partial or full dentures. A bridge consists of crowning (capping) the adjacent teeth to a space and connecting them together. This is usually done when a patient wants solution that doesn’t come in and out of their mouth and they are not a candidate for dental implants. Removable dentistry can also be a great option. Removable dentistry won’t feel and look quite as natural as a dental implant, however, this option is the most economical and can give you back the smile or bite that you want. Affordable dentistry

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Not every patient that comes to our dental practice has dental insurance or unlimited finances to cover all of their dental treatment. Thus, we offer a service to our patients called Care Credit. Care Credit, which can be found on our website, is a payment plan that allows patients to break up the cost of dentistry. As long as you make the payments within the length of the repayment period, there is no interest. In other words, it is interest free and allows patients to break up the cost of dentistry. Care Credit can also be used in several other types of medical offices as well. If you would like to break up the cost of your dental treatment, feel free to call our office or visit our website at www.drkutsch.com and find out how to apply. Haven’t been to the dentist in a while?

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Life happens and people move, change careers, simply forget, or have more pressing issues and don’t get their teeth cleaned for while. It’s never too late to work on having great oral health and we have dental appointments specifically designed in order to get patients back on track with their oral health. Sometimes, it is little more than just getting a dental cleaning, x rays, and an exam to get back to healthy. However, just like your car, the longer you wait between getting it serviced can also create a little more work to get it where you want it to be. Don’t be embarrassed or feel guilty, we are here to help you achieve your dental goals and get you back on track with what you want. Dentistry is a life long process and can go in many different directions depending upon the patient. What if I have too much dentistry to do all at one time?

Monday, June 7th, 2010

For many patients, dentistry is a work in progress. Albeit, some patients complete all of their dentistry in one appointment, or one week, however, for most patients dental work is a process in order to achieve their long term goals for oral health. There are many ways to provide dental care without doing it all at once. Many patients will do the dental work (dental fillings, crowns, implants, etc.) in one area at a time so that they don’t have to continue to get numb multiple times in the same location. Other patients will work on one tooth per appointment. It really boils down to goals, time frame, and budget. Another technology that has recently become available is called Snap On Smiles. This is a cosmetic dental appliance that allows us to cover all of the teeth with an esthetic, removable appliance so that the patient can have a great looking smile while they work toward completing their dentistry. Not only is this option very affordable, it also gives the patient an idea of what their smile could look like. Dr. Carson Kutsch Albany Oregon Dentist www.drkutsch.com

What type of music relaxes you during dentistry?

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

At our practice we have several options when it comes to music. We recognize that dentistry can cause anxiety for many patients and we want to create an environment that helps reduce this. Music can often be a great escape from many of the things that we do including chores and long car rides. Music is also great during dental appointments. We have several i-pods with different types of music as well as satellite radio that can be set to nearly any type of station. Next time you are in our office for anything from a dental cleaning to a single appointment crown (CEREC), don’t hesitate to ask for your own music to make you more comfortable. Why do you get cavities in your teeth?

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Dental decay has been an area studied by dentistry for hundreds of years. With the invention of the microscope and microbiology, a significant advance was made in how we understand the process of dental decay. Today, we know that the pH, or acid level, of the biofilm (bacteria living on the teeth) is what plays a key role in whether or not a patient is likely to get cavities. Dental caries is a bacterial disease in the oral cavity that has symptoms including cavities in the teeth. We know that there are two areas that primarily affect a patient’s risk of decay and these are diet and medical history (acid reflux, medications that cause dry mouth, etc). In the past, we thought that the risk of getting cavities could be solved with good oral hygiene and some fluoride. However, even with superb hygiene you can still get decay if you have other risk factors. Therefore, we measure the bacteria on our patient’s teeth on an annual basis and determine their risk for dental cavities. Not only does this protect the teeth but it also protects previous dental work as well. Carson Kutsch Albany Oregon Dentist www.drkutsch.com

Can you stick your tongue out?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Did you know that a lot of people have what is called ankyloglossia (”tongue tied”) and cannot stick out their tongue. In some cases this can cause speech problems, feeding problems,  or just prevent the patient from doing simple things like licking their lips. This situation can easily be remedied today in dentistry with the use of a laser. The laser is very gentle to tissue, doesn’t require any stitches (dental suture), and typically only requires a topical anesthetic………That’s right! No shots! Whether you are an adult or a child, having a frenectomy with the laser (eliminating the tongue tied area) can be a great benefit with very little post appointment problems or discomfort.
